Good managers rarely hear what their support actually changed. “You backed my proposal when it was unpopular” or “you gave me the project nobody thought I was ready for” is the kind of line they’ll remember long after the leaving drinks.
How to write it
- Lead with a specific moment: a decision they made, a meeting they had your back in, feedback that changed your work.
- Keep it about them, not about who replaces them or what the team will do next.
- If you want to stay in touch, say so plainly. Most former bosses are glad to be asked.
- Skip jokes about finally being free of their deadlines unless your relationship really is that relaxed.
Heartfelt messages for a boss
You gave me the project nobody thought I was ready for, then made sure I was. I’ll be grateful for that for a long time.
Thank you for being the kind of manager who asks how I’m doing and waits for the real answer.
Every good habit I have at work, I picked up watching you run this team. Thank you for all of it.
You never took credit for our wins and always took the heat for our misses. That’s rarer than you think.
I joined for the job and stayed for the boss. Your next team is very lucky.
Thank you for the honest feedback, especially the parts I didn’t want to hear. It made me better.
Short farewell messages for a manager
Thank you for believing in me before I did. Good luck with everything ahead.
Best boss I’ve had. Not close. Go and make another team this good.
You set the bar. We’ll do our best to keep it there.
Thank you for your trust, your patience, and the 1:1s that turned into therapy. All the best.
Wherever you go next, they’re getting a great leader. Please stay in touch.
Grateful to have worked for you. Enjoy the next chapter.
Lightly funny goodbyes for a boss
Who is going to say “let’s take this offline” with the perfect amount of menace now?
We promise to keep the stand-ups under fifteen minutes. We will fail, but we promise.
Thank you for approving every leave request without asking why. Your successor has big shoes to fill.
Your new team doesn’t yet know about the spreadsheet colour-coding. Please go easy on them.
I’ll miss your calendar invites titled “quick chat.” They were never quick, and they were always worth it.
Good luck! Leave us the password to the good coffee machine.
From the whole team
From all of us: thank you for building a team where people want to stay. That’s your legacy here.
You turned a group of strangers into a team that actually likes each other. We’ll miss you.
Thank you for fighting for our headcount, our time off, and our sanity. We noticed every time.
The team you’re leaving behind is stronger because of you. Good luck in the new role.
We’re sad to lose you and excited for you, in roughly equal parts. Thank you for everything.
Your door was always open. Ours will be too. Come back and visit.
What to avoid
- Speculating about why they’re leaving, or mentioning office politics.
- Comments about who might replace them or whether things will change.
- Over-the-top praise that reads like you’re angling for a reference.
