Farewell & leaving

Goodbye Messages to Coworkers When You’re the One Leaving

Your goodbye email or Slack message is one of the most-read things you’ll ever write at a company. People open it, scroll to see if they’re mentioned, and remember the tone for years.

Keep it short, warm, and forward-looking. Thank the team as a whole, mention a few people or moments if you can do it without leaving anyone out, and give a personal email or LinkedIn so people can find you.

How to write it

  • Send it on your last morning, not your last minute, so people can reply.
  • Thank teams rather than listing individuals, unless the list is short and complete.
  • Never use a goodbye message to air grievances. It will be screenshotted.
  • Include your personal email or LinkedIn URL at the bottom.

Goodbye email to the whole team

  • Today is my last day. Thank you for four years of good work, bad coffee, and a lot of laughter. I’m proud of what we built together. You can always reach me at [email].

  • After three great years, I’m moving on. I’ll miss the people more than anything — thank you for making this a place I looked forward to coming back to on Mondays.

  • It’s time for me to say goodbye. Thank you for your patience while I learned, your help when I was stuck, and your company along the way. Let’s keep in touch.

  • This is my last day here. Leaving a team this good is the hardest part of taking a new job. Thank you all.

Short Slack goodbyes

  • Last day today! Thank you all for being brilliant coworkers. Find me on LinkedIn.

  • Signing off for the last time. It’s been a privilege. Stay in touch!

  • Logging off for good. Thanks for the memories, the help, and the gifs.

  • Goodbye, team. You were the best part of this job.

  • That’s a wrap from me. Thank you for everything — I’ll miss you all.

Funny goodbye messages

  • As of 5pm, my calendar is officially empty. Please direct all ‘quick questions’ to my replacement.

  • I’m leaving, but my passive-aggressive kitchen notes will remain as a legacy.

  • It’s my last day. I’ve hidden a snack somewhere in the office. Good luck.

  • To whoever inherits my desk: the drawer sticks, the chair squeaks, and the plant is fake. Enjoy.

  • Goodbye! Please don’t revert my pull requests until at least next week.

For a close team

  • You all turned a job into something much better. I’m going to miss our stand-ups more than I ever expected.

  • Thank you for teaching me, covering for me, and laughing at my jokes when they didn’t deserve it.

  • I came here for the role and stayed for the people. Leaving you is the hardest part.

  • Thank you for being colleagues I’d call friends. Lunch soon, please.

What to avoid

  • Explaining in detail why you’re leaving.
  • Name-checking only some people in a big team email.
  • Hitting “reply all” to a company-wide list without checking whether that’s the norm.
