Farewell & leaving

Farewell Messages for a Team Member

A team member leaving changes the shape of the team. Everyone feels it in the next stand-up, so the farewell card is a chance to acknowledge what they brought to the group, not just to you individually.

Team farewells work best when people write about the team’s shared moments: the release that went wrong at midnight, the offsite, the running joke in the retro board.

How to write it

  • Write about something the whole team experienced together.
  • If they’re moving internally, mention you’ll still collaborate.
  • Keep the tone upbeat — teams usually want to celebrate, not mourn.

From teammates

  • The team chemistry was different with you in it — better. Thank you for that.

  • From the midnight release to the offsite karaoke, it’s been a ride. Good luck!

  • You were the glue in every retro. We’ll have to figure out how to stick together without you.

  • Thanks for the code reviews that were kind and thorough. Rare combination.

  • You made Mondays easier and Fridays more fun. We’ll miss you.

When they’re moving to another team

  • Not a goodbye, just a change of Slack channel. We’ll miss having you in ours.

  • Your new team is getting a gem. We expect regular visits.

  • Same company, different stand-up. Don’t forget about us.

  • Good luck on the new team! We’ll still be bothering you with questions.

Funny team farewells

  • Who will remember everyone’s coffee order now?

  • You leaving means someone else has to run the retro. We’re in trouble.

  • We’ve renamed the meeting room after you. Just kidding, but we thought about it.

  • The team velocity is about to drop. Good luck anyway!

  • Please don’t tell your new team about our sprint planning habits.

Short and heartfelt

  • Thank you for being such a great teammate.

  • We were better with you on the team.

  • Going to miss you in every meeting.

  • Wishing you the very best.

  • Thank you for everything you brought to us.

What to avoid

  • Joking about the workload they’re leaving behind.
