Whether you’re signing a paper card or an online one, the question is the same — what to write in a few lines that doesn’t sound like the twelve messages above it. These examples cover close colleagues, people you barely knew, and everything in between.
How to write it
- Write two sentences: one about them, one wishing them well.
- If you hardly knew them, keep it short and kind — that’s fine.
- Avoid copying the message above. That’s what private, online leaving cards are for.
For a colleague you knew well
I’ll miss our cups of tea at 3pm and your running commentary on the weekly meeting. Good luck, and keep in touch.
You’ve been brilliant to work with and even better to have a moan with. All the best.
Thank you for always having my back. The office won’t be the same.
Best of luck in the new job — they’ve no idea what they’re in for. (That’s a compliment.)
It’s been a joy. Don’t be a stranger, and don’t forget about Friday drinks.
For a colleague you didn’t know well
Wishing you all the very best in your next role.
We didn’t get to work together much, but you were always lovely. Good luck!
Good luck with the move — I hope it’s everything you want.
All the best for the future!
Sorry to see you go. Best of luck.
Funny leaving card messages
Sorry you’re leaving. Can I have your chair?
You’ll be missed, especially by the biscuit tin.
Good luck with the new job. Your new colleagues won’t make tea like we do.
Who am I going to blame things on now?
It’s been emotional. Mostly frustration, but emotional.
For a long-serving colleague
Twelve years is a long time — thank you for being the person everyone knew to ask.
The place won’t feel the same without you. Thank you for everything over the years.
You’ve seen more managers, office moves, and coffee machines than anyone. Enjoy the next chapter.
From all of us: thank you for being the heart of this office.
What to avoid
- Writing more than a few lines on a shared paper card when space is tight.
- In-jokes that will confuse their family if they show them the card.
