Welcome & onboarding

Welcome Messages for a New Team Member

The first welcome messages a new team member gets set the tone for how they feel about the team. A good one is friendly and useful: who you are, what you do, and how you can help.

Generic “welcome aboard!” messages are nice but forgettable. Adding one practical detail — your role, your favourite lunch spot, the channel to ask questions in — makes the message something they’ll actually use.

How to write it

  • Introduce yourself with your role and how you’ll work together.
  • Offer one concrete form of help.
  • Keep it short — they’ll be reading dozens of messages.

Friendly and useful

  • Welcome to the team! I’m Sam, I look after the design system. If anything looks off, I want to know.

  • Welcome! I’ve been here two years and still ask dumb questions — ask me yours anytime.

  • So glad you’re here. I sit next to you and have spare chargers, snacks, and opinions.

  • Welcome aboard! I run our weekly demos — come along on Friday, it’s the best way to see what everyone does.

  • Welcome! Lunch on your first Thursday is on the team. Pick anywhere.

From a manager

  • Welcome to the team! We hired you for your curiosity — please bring it to every meeting.

  • Delighted to have you with us. Your first few weeks are for learning; don’t worry about delivering yet.

  • Welcome! My door (and DMs) are always open. Our first 1:1 is on Wednesday.

  • We’re so glad you said yes. Can’t wait to see what you build here.

  • Welcome aboard. The team’s been looking forward to this day for weeks.

Warm and short

  • Welcome to the team — we’re lucky to have you!

  • So excited to work with you. Welcome!

  • Welcome! You’re going to love it here.

  • Glad you’re here. Let’s grab a coffee this week.

  • Welcome aboard — great to have you!

Lightly funny

  • Welcome! The coffee machine is temperamental, the Wi-Fi password is a secret, and the team is great.

  • Welcome to the team! Don’t worry, nobody understands the acronyms for the first three months.

  • Welcome! You’ve officially joined the best team in the building. We’ve checked.

  • Welcome aboard! Your first task: learn everyone’s coffee order. Kidding. Mostly.

  • Welcome! Please lower our average age / raise our average talent. Either works.

What to avoid

  • Overloading them with information in the welcome message.
  • Jokes about how hard the job is.
